Striking union employees at Voith Paper Fabric and Roll Systems said
they received letters Wednesday telling them their health insurance had
been canceled.
The development appears to be the lone change in the
4-day-old impasse between the company and its 31 striking union workers,
members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace
Workers Lodge No. 1855, District 10.
At midday Thursday, about a dozen workers picketed the
company at 375 Byrd Ave., where the primary work is refurbishing steel
rolls used in paper machines.
“Legally they had the right to do this, but they didn’t
have to,” said Scott Parr, assistant directing business representative
for the union’s District 10, on the health insurance cancellation. “We
have some of our members who are in cancer care and MS care.”
The company said in its letters to union members that they were eligible for COBRA continuations of their medical policies.
The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act
(COBRA) allows workers to keep medical plans for 18 months if they pay
the entire premium, including the portion that was previously paid by
the company.
“The decision by the company to discontinue the striking
employees’ health insurance effective Sept. 23 should not come as a
surprise to the employees as it is consistent with company policy, past
practice and its health insurance plan, and is common in situations like
this,” said company spokeswoman Sheryl Zapcic in an email to USA TODAY
NETWORK-Wisconsin.
She said in its letters, the company “made employees aware of alternative health care coverage options that they may elect.”
"I’ve led strikes before where companies did not feel the
need to do that,” said Parr. “We should settle this with as much
goodwill as possible.”
In an earlier email, Zapcic said the company valued its
union workforce in Neenah and was surprised that it had rejected the
contract, which she said included “a competitive wage and desirable
benefits package.”
Workers rejected a tentative union contract Saturday and voted to go on strike starting Monday.
Jim Raschke, a 24-year employee at the facility, walked
the picket line Thursday. He’d been on the five-member bargaining
committee, along with Parr, that negotiated the contract.
“We worked hard on the tentative agreement,” said Raschke.
“I agreed that we should recommend this and take it to
our members,” said Parr. “But when I got to the meeting and heard the
anger over mandatory overtime, I was not surprised by the vote.”
Negotiations are now in the hands of a federal mediator.
Workers at Voith’s two Appleton facilities, larger
locations that employ about 400 people, are unaffected by the Neenah
strike.
